Andrew Martinsen's Walleye Fishing Update
Walleye Fishing Mindset Tips
The Mind-state for Finding and Catching Consistently
Walleye are an unpredictable fish that will bite one minute and be gone the next. If you are going to keep up with them, you need to do your homework. Learn how season and weather conditions affect the fish behavior. Use this knowledge to study a lake map for all the possible places walleyes can be. Don't be afraid to chat up the people at the local bait shop. They are often knowledgeable resources that can give you reliable accounts of what other angler are experiencing or using. Never hit the waters without an idea of where you are going to look for the walleye.
You can't hook a fish if you can't find them, so get comfortable with scouting methods. Successful scouting requires moving a lot and presenting faster than you might be used to. When looking for walleye, you want to cover as much ground as possible. Use your electronics and map to look over the most promising areas. You goal is to find active fish, so your presentation needs to be aggressive. Things can slow down accordingly once you are ready to fish, but this expedition is about finding the groups that are interested in taking the bait.
Practice makes perfect and that applies to walleye fishing as well. Many times it's not the presentation that matters, but how well you do it. Spend the time honing your skills so that you are confident every time you drop your bait in the water. You should be so comfortable with a method that becomes second nature to you.
Comfortable, but not complacent is the key. Just because you are good at a certain presentation doesn't mean you should ignore all others. There will be times that the old standbys just won't work no matter how good you are. The versatile angler that can switch between methods will be able to adapt no matter what the weather and walleye are doing.
It's also important to not fish memories. Too many anglers get stuck on certain spots because they've found fish there before. It's all right to check areas that are known hotspots, but if you aren't seeing or catching fish it's time to move on. Walleye are always on the move as they look for better food and cover. They don't hold in one spot for very long, so you have to let go of the notion that the fish should be there because they've been there before.
In order to be consistently successful at walleye fishing, it's important to keep an open mind about how you find and catch these fish. As much as we know about walleye behavior, they are still unpredictable. It's not unusual for walleyes in one lake to respond differently than walleyes in another lake. If what you are doing isn't working, you need to be able to transition into something that does. Being flexible, versatile and confident will make you a force to be reckoned with on the water.

"Andrew,
25 Inch Walleye Caught at Lake of the Woods
Walleye Fishing Secrets Student Shares an Awesome Catch
Here's a 25 inch walleye caught at Lake of the Woods, Ontario. The
picture is a great memento for me.
I caught it drifting. We caught it amongst some smaller ones that ended up
on the dinner table.
Your advice was helpful in making my trip successful. Thank you!"
