Logging More Fish

Using a Pencil and Paper to Increase Your Catch Count

If there's one thing that separates the super-successful Walleye angler from others who love the sport but may not enjoy quite the same level of success, it may be this:

Fishing Logs.

A fishing log can be crucial to the success of a Walleye angler, and it can be used as a troubleshooting guide and a guideline to what may be effective in the current conditions.

Every time you fish it's a great idea to keep track of the specifics in a log, and this can include all of the known factors.

Including ..

- Bait

- What tackle and colors you were using

- What the temperature of the water is

- The degree of clarity that is present in the water - The weather conditions

- The wind speed

- The wind direction

- And any other relevant factors you feel are important

It's a great idea to list the techniques, the trolling speed and method if applicable, the time of day, the sun and cloud conditions, the results and more.

Every time you change any factor a new log entry should be created.

If you have electronics that can track your position, or a topographical map that you can get coordinates from, these should also be included in the log.

A fishing log can be a more effective way to pinpoint which baits and rigs to try first on any given Walleye trip for better results.

When you first start out, look at the fishing log for past experiences with the same conditions to determine what worked at that time.

Many times what worked in the past may work again, but this is not always the case.

With a fishing log, you may be halfway ahead from the start, because you can look at past results under similar conditions, and use these baits and techniques as a starting point.

You may need to switch up, because every single factor can have an effect, and if one factor changes slightly what works may change as well.

Over time, your fishing log will become more of a manual, with a number of hints and suggestions right at your fingertips to stack the odds in your favor.

Each Walleye fishing expedition means more research and results to be entered into the log.

This will eventually allow you to determine which baits, rigs, and techniques to try under specific conditions, and you will even have second and third options which have been successful in the past.

A good tip is to use a standard size notebook, and to keep it in a large plastic zip lock bag. This will prevent any water damage and protect the writing.

Another option is to use a computer system to enter all the data into.

This can give you a searchable encyclopedia of all of your fishing history, and can dramatically cut down on time spent finding fish over time.

A fishing log can be just as important as the fishing equipment when it comes to catching Walleye.

These fish are known for being wily, and acting in unusual and unexpected ways.

A fishing log can help decrease this, and increase your odds of outwitting the fish no matter what the conditions are.

25 Inch Walleye Caught at Lake of the Woods

Walleye Fishing Secrets Student Shares an Awesome Catch

"Andrew,

Here's a 25 inch walleye caught at Lake of the Woods, Ontario. The picture is a great memento for me.

I caught it drifting. We caught it amongst some smaller ones that ended up on the dinner table.

Your advice was helpful in making my trip successful. Thank you!"
