Andrew Martinsen's Walleye Fishing Update

Andrew Martinsen Walleye Fishing

The Cotton Cordell Lures that Make Walleye Bite

Hi, Andrew Martinsen here. Cotton Cordell fishing lures have been around for a while. For a half century they have produced lures that fish find hard to resist. When it is time to hit the water in search of walleye, you can?t go wrong with a Cotton Cordell lure in your tackle box. When trolling is the method of choice, the Grappler Shad does a great job. This bait can be trolled successfully at high speeds. Between the natural eyes, the body design and the action it produces walleye can?t seem to help themselves.

The traditional Shad is also a deep running lure that works great when trolled. It normally goes down to eight foot depths but can reach twenty when set-up correctly. If you need it to go this deep, attach the lure to about 150 feet of 10 pound test line. Keep your speed steady and on the fast side to keep it deep.

An angler can?t go wrong by adding a few Wally Divers to the arsenal. The Wally Diver sinks fast and works well for trolling. It comes in a variety of sizes so you can reach the depth that you are targeting with ease. There is even a Jointed Wally Diver that has quite a bit of action. When walleye are deep, they find the Wally Diver hard to let pass by.

It is a lot harder to stir up walleye when they are suspended deep. In these situations, you may want to try the Gay Blade?s flathead. This lure produces a pulsating action that screams ?easy meal?. It works best when cast vertically. Drop your lure down just below the group of walleye and retrieve fast. This lure needs speed to optimize its action.

Walleye spend a good portion of their time hunting shallow structure and plant beds. If you want to bring home some walleye, you will have to hunt these spots too. Cotton Cordell has lures that will help you out here too.

The Suspending Super Spot is great for fishing over shallow structures. It normally runs about three feet down when retrieved. This lure will float in the water without sinking if there is a pause in the retrieve.

To utilize this feature, cast just beyond and parallel to the structure you are targeting. Slowly retrieve the lure; pausing occasionally to let the lure suspend. This is a nice, natural presentation. It makes the lure look like a distracted prey fish. To a walleye, distracted bait fish are an easy meal waiting to happen.

Cotton Cordell has a couple other suspending lures that you might want to try if the walleye are ignoring you. The Suspending Wally Demon has both action and sound built in so it works best when casted or trolled. The Suspending Ripplin? Red Fin also has motion but it will suspend in the water when stopped. Use this lure to slow troll especially when you need to keep you lure at a certain depth.

No Cotton Cordell collection is complete without the original Ripplin? Red Fin. It is designed to give the illusion of movement. The body is wavy, so whether it is suspended or moving on the retrieve it always looks like it is moving.

Cotton Cordell lures are built for success. Their lures were originally designed to help fishing guides make expeditions more fruitful. Now, they have a whole line available to any level of angler. Although the technology has changed over the years, the Cotton Cordell motto hasn?t. Fish can swim, but they can?t hide from a Cotton Cordell lure.

"Andrew,

Here's a 25 inch walleye caught at Lake of the Woods, Ontario. The picture is a great memento for me.

I caught it drifting. We caught it amongst some smaller ones that ended up on the dinner table.

Your advice was helpful in making my trip successful. Thank you!"
