Walleye Fishing on the Largest Great Lake

Exciting Fishing Excursions Await

Lake Superior can give you as a walleye angler an exciting time on the water. This is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area.

One of the most beloved places to fish for walleye on this giant lake is near the picturesque city of Duluth. On windy days around Duluth you can go to the St. Louis River and bay area to fish for walleye near underwater rock structure and areas with weed beds.

During the spring and early summer months your best bet for catching walleye will be around the St. Louis River. As the water temperatures increase in the summer you will find that the walleye venture out into the open waters of the lake. Typically late spring and early summer are the peak walleye fishing times on Lake Superior and around the area where the St. Louis River runs into it.

One of the reasons that Lake Superior has become a favorite to anglers is because of the large trophy fish that have been caught on it. Few lakes offer the trophy walleye that Lake Superior does. Lake Superior offers anglers a fishing experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.

On the St. Louis River and on Lake Superior walleye are typically caught in shallow waters that are at most 15 feet deep. Anglers tend to have success in these waters when using fluorescent orange and green spinners with night crawlers. One of the reasons anglers love Lake Superior walleye fishing is that two fishing lines are allowed per person. This allows anglers to catch a lot of fish rapidly when they are trolling.

On days when the fish are biting anglers will be very busy with this technique. Another method that has been found to be successful is vertical jigging. Vertical jigging can catch walleye when they are out in the open waters of this great lake.

It is extremely important that anglers use caution when fishing on Lake Superior. It is best to stay fairly close to where you launch if weather could be a concern and to make sure that you are prepared if the weather suddenly changes. This lake in some ways is more like ocean fishing than many of its lake counterparts in Minnesota and beyond. Large waves can develop quickly and anglers need to mindful of making sure that they are being safe when they are on this large body of water.

Walleye Fishing Secrets Student Shares an Awesome Catch

"Andrew,

Here's a 25 inch walleye caught at Lake of the Woods, Ontario. The picture is a great memento for me.

I caught it drifting. We caught it amongst some smaller ones that ended up on the dinner table.

Your advice was helpful in making my trip successful. Thank you!"
